His childhood was extremely difficult:
His biological father, Purcell Tyson, was little known except that he worked as a driver.
His stepfather, Kirkpatrick, was a ghostly figure, leaving the family when Mike was 2 years old due to gambling problems.
His mother struggled with alcohol addiction and had a troubled history; she passed away when Mike was 16.
“Mike’s neighborhood” was notorious for its high crime rate. It was not uncommon for Mike to be arrested up to 38 times by the age of 13.
His boxing skills were discovered by Bobby Stewart, a former boxer and youth counselor, who trained Mike briefly before introducing him to the respected boxing trainer Cus D’Amato, whom Mike deeply respected.
