Liverpool boss Arne Slot has already contacted Darwin Nunez to tell the Uruguayan striker that he wants him to be the frontman for his Reds’ revolution.

Slot is aware that the £85million forward became disillusioned under Jurgen Klopp last season after being asked to fill the huge void left by the German’s departure from Anfield.

He has been given time off to recover from a bitter Copa America experience which ended with him leaping into the stands to swap punches with Colombian fans after a disappointing semi-final defeat.

With Diogo Jota arriving in the United States for Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the USA after being given time to rest after playing for Portugal at the Euros, Slot can now step up a tactical plan that will see him instruct his frontline to trigger the team’s press.

One senior player jokingly described the Dutchman as “a madman” after being instructed to put in more of the hard yards in the States.

Slot has also been showing his team video footage of how Manchester City and his former club Feyenoord are able to squeeze opponents into making mistakes.

Liverpool are yet to enter the transfer market since Slot’s appointment – but the Dutchman is happy for the club to keep their powder dry until a player that will fit into his system becomes available.

Slot developed a reputation in Holland for delivering results on shoestring budgets – which was a major factor the the decision to tempt him away from Feyenoord.

In six previous seasons as a manager with minnows Cambuur, AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord, he hasn’t spent more than £7million on a single transfer.

Instead he focussed on improving the talent he inherited – and was able to secure a higher place in the table than all of the managers he succeeded.

Slot’s first full season as a coach saw him guide Cambuur to within touching distance of promotion to the Eredivisie before moving to AZ as assistant coach.

When he succeeded John van den Brom as boss in 2019, he masterminded a shock title charge that saw the club fighting Erik ten Hag’s Ajax at the top of the table before the season was cancelled due to the pandemic. Alkmaar still made almost £50million through player sales during Slot’s time at the club.

In three years at Feyenoord, it was a similar pattern. No fewer than 16 players were either sold or released when he took over, yet despite being given a budget of just £6million, Slot was able to guide the team to the Conference League Final, where Jose Mourinho’s Roma prevailed.

The new Liverpool home shirt for the 2024/2025 season features a Chrome Yellow pattern design sees a modernised take on the legendary 84 Home Shirt, a season which saw the Reds become European Champions for the 4th time in Rome and the first English Club to win a Treble of major honours. You can pre-order it now for Thursday, May 16.

The following season, another 15 players were sold to raise £70million – and although half of the money was earmarked for new signings there were six academy players in the team when Feyenoord were crowned champions.

Last season saw him undertake another rebuild when Feyenoord cashed in on the transfer market again, yet they still lifted the Dutch Cup.
