England learn potential Euro 2024 quarter-final opponents if they beat Slovakia and know the one player to watch out for

England have learned their potential Euro 2024 quarter-final opponents ahead of the game against Slovakia.

The Three Lions topped Group C with one win and two draws despite intense criticism of their performances under Gareth Southgate.

England avoided facing the Netherlands in the round of 16 and have been placed on the favourable side of the bracket, avoiding traditional European heavyweights such as Spain, France, Germany and Portugal.

They face Slovakia on June 30 at 5pm GMT looking to book their place in the final eight of the competition and their potential opponents have now been confirmed.

If England win, they will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals after they cruised to a 2-0 win against Italy at the Olympiastadion.

The Swiss dominated proceedings from kick-off and were rewarded with a first-half goal from Nottingham Forest midfielder Remo Freuler after a superb pass from Ruben Vargas.

Vargas was a constant threat to the Italy defence and doubled his country’s lead straight after the break with a fantastic side-footed effort into top corner.

The Augsberg winger was their biggest threat throughout the game and England fans instantly took notice on social media, marking him down as one to watch in the potential quarter-final match up.

One fan wrote: “Ruben Vargas looks quality!”

Another said: “Watch out for Ruben Vargas.”

Ahead of the game against Slovakia, former England international Ian Wright claimed ‘something is not right’ about Southgate.

He said on Stick to Football: “You can see something about him in his interviews.

“When you look at Gareth before this tournament, you look at him and his demeanour, he was very confident.

“When he’s speaking to people and looking at reporters, there is an authority to what he’s saying, and he has confidence in what he’s saying.

“Now you’re hearing him say, ‘There’s something quite not right,’ and he does this thing at the moment where he’s speaking and will look down and you can see that he’s contemplating something else.

“There is something not right with him and I really feel for him because I think he’s taken on so much with what he’s had to do as England manager and change so many different things culturally and politically.”
