EURO 2024: WHY PUBLISHING RONALDO’S HEART RATE COULD EARN HIM A FINE

The company Whoop released data on Tuesday concerning Cristiano Ronaldo’s heart rate during the Euro 2024 round of 16 between Portugal and Slovenia. According to an expert, this practice is illegal and could result in a fine for the player from UEFA, which has not yet reacted.

Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a fine from UEFA. After the round of 16 match between Portugal and Slovenia last Sunday, the 39-year-old striker’s heart rate, when he came on for the penalty shootout, was revealed by the company Whoop on social media.

An illegal practice according to an expert

For UEFA, it could be a case of “wild marketing” as relayed by the specialist Ricardo Fort . In 2012, the Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner was fined 100,000 euros by the body because of a pair of underpants displayed in the colours of the bookmaker Paddy Power. UEFA already has official sponsors and refuses to allow others to be associated with the event.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo missed his penalty during the match against Jan Oblak. The veteran still showed up for the penalty shootout, and it was during this sequence that Whoop shared data about “CR7”. The company reported that the player was playing at 100 bpm, his lowest level during the match.

This Friday, Portugal will play their quarter-final at Euro 2024 against France. For the time being, UEFA has not reacted to this commercial publication by Whoop nor sanctioned Cristiano Ronaldo. It remains to be seen whether the Al-Nassr player will still wear his branded sensor, at the risk of exposing himself to a sanction.
