Liverpool CEO hints at FFP and PSR issues for Reds not signing players this summer

Liverpool’s hopes of accelerating their transfer plans this summer seem to have taken a hit. The club’s chief executive officer Billy Hogan reiterated the Reds’ support for the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), hinting it could be the reason behind the club’s slow summer transfer window so far.

Liverpool are yet to make a senior signing this summer since new manager Arne Slot replaced outgoing Jurgen Klopp at the Anfield hotseat. Hogan’s comments may not be music to the ears of Liverpool supporters, who remain the only club in Europe’s top five leagues without a new recruit.

Hogan told The Independent:

“I think it is important that the rules have teeth and if clubs fall foul of that then the Premier League has a process to go through. We are supportive of those rules and being sustainable. We think that clubs should be run sustainably, not losing money.”

He continued:

“We are supportive of the new financial regulations and we’re working through those. The new system means changing from PSR to the squad-cost rule. That will come into play after this season. We have the most competitive and global league, and it’s important we keep it that way.”

Liverpool owners FSG have always adhered to stand by PSR and it will be further amplified with their rumored acquisition of French club Girondins de Bordeaux falling through, leading to the historic club filing for bankruptcy.

Closer to home, Liverpool’s derby rivals Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City all failed to adhere to the financial rules imposed by the Premier League and were sanctioned last season.

Liverpool working behind the scenes on new signings – Reports

Despite Hogan’s comments, Liverpool have been working behind the scenes on the transfer front. Newcastle United’s exciting winger Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move to the Reds while defender Joe Gomez has been linked the other way.

A defensive midfielder is a priority while recruitment of a central defender also seems to be on the cards for the 19-time English champions with their reported target Lenny Yoro joining rivals Manchester United. Contract renewals for Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who are yet to report for pre-season following their Euro campaign, are also said to be on the agenda.

On the field, however, Liverpool have been impressive with Slot deploying new tactics that the fans have taken to while his dealing of the media has also impressed the Anfield faithful. With a win over probably Premier League title contenders Arsenal in pre-season, the Dutch manager’s start to life at Liverpool has been smooth.
