Mikel Arteta has been urged to make a move for Manchester City’s wantaway striker Julian Alvarez.

The Argentine joined City in 2022 and he has since helped them to win two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. He has also enjoyed success on the international stage, winning two Copa Americas and the 2022 World Cup.

Arteta has already raided City twice before, to sign Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandar Zinchenko in the summer of 2022. And former Arsenal skipper William Gallas believes Alvarez can be the man to finally fire the Gunners to their first title for 20 years.

“Julian Alvarez would be a great signing for Arsenal. He is a world champion, Copa America winner, won the Premier League twice in a row and won the Champions League. He has played most of City’s important games and is a starter for Argentina,” he told Genting Casino.

“He would bring so much winning experience to Arsenal and he looks like a player that wants to reach his very highest level by playing as many minutes as possible. Alvarez would take Arsenal to the next level.

“I don’t know if he could score 20 goals but he can play on the flank or behind the striker and be very influential. If Julian Alvarez joined Arsenal it would be different to Cole Palmer joining Chelsea because Arsenal nearly won the title, Chelsea were in a bad, bad situation.”

Alvarez would likely welcome an approach from Arsenal, having signaled his intention to leave City. He set out his stance at the Olympics, telling DIRECTV Sports : “I haven’t stopped to think about what I’m going to do. When this [the Olympics] is over I’ll start thinking about what I want for myself.

“We’ll see how things go. Last season I was one of the players who played the most minutes in the team. But it’s true: in the end, in important games, you don’t like being left out and you want to contribute.”

Jesus has been Arsenal’s main striker since arriving, though scored just four Premier League goals last season. And if the Gunners are to finally end their title hoodoo, Gallas has insisted they need to bring in reinforcements up top.

“I’m sticking by my prediction of Arsenal winning the title but they still need a top class striker that can go and score them 20 goals in the Premier League. The only issue is that they haven’t signed that striker yet, despite coming so close to being champions last season,” he added.

“They got that close without having a striker who could score 20 goals, Manchester City won it because they have Erling Haaland. You have to have a player like that. With Gabriel Jesus, he has injuries and isn’t consistent enough. They need to buy a striker.”
