WHAT HAPPENED?

France came back from 1-0 down to defeat Egypt 3-1 in the semi-final of the Olympics in front of their own fans thanks to a brace from Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and a late strike from his former team-mate Michael Olise. Mahmoud Saber had given Egypt the lead but Mateta turned the game on its head, with his second goal prompting France coach Thierry Henry to produce a great celebration.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Defeat to Egypt would have been a really disappointing way for France’s campaign to come to an end. Thankfully, Henry could rely on Mateta – who scored his third and fourth goals of the Olympics – and Olise to fire the hosts to the final, where they will take on Spain. Olise teed Mateta up with a wonderful assist in the second half to make it 1-1.
