Free agent running back and two-time rushing champion Ezekiel Elliott is meeting with a top NFC team.
According to a report from Josina Anderson of CBS Sports, Ezekiel Elliott is “currently meeting with” his old team in the Dallas Cowboys. Anderson added that Elliott’s reps are in the facility today.
The Cowboys lost two-time 1,000-yard rusher and lead RB Tony Pollard to the Tennessee Titans in free agency. The team’s current RB depth chart consists of sophomore Deuce Vaughn, Rico Dowdle, free agent signing Royce Freeman and Malik Davis.
Elliott spent his first seven NFL seasons with the Cowboys (2016 to 2022) before he was released in a cap-saving move last year. “Zeke” signed with the New England Patriots in 2023 free agency, recording 642 rushing yards, three rushing scores and 51 receptions for 313 yards and two receiving scores.
Elliott won the rushing titles in 2016 and 2018 and helped Dallas to four playoff appearances (2016, 2018, 2021 and 2022), including three NFC East division titles. He sits third all-time in rushing among Cowboys (8,262) behind Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (17,162) and Tony Dorsett (12,036).
For his career, Elliott has 8,904 rushing yards and 71 touchdowns.
Ezekiel Elliott Can Still Produce In A Rotational Role
Elliott has been past his prime for a while now, but it’s clear the former 2016 first-round pick can still produce in a No. 2 RB role.
Elliott nearly put up 1,000 yards of offense on a woeful New England team in a limited role last season, with Rhamondre Stevenson serving as the club’s main running back. He was a consistent 1,000-yard threat in Dallas, so Elliott could very well be a useful rotational player in Dallas’ offense.
None of the current RBs on the Cowboys’ depth chart are established No. 1 guys. So unless Jerry Jones adds someone in the offseason, he could look at bringing back Elliott and using an RB-by-committee approach.
