The NBA has seen a lot of players get their jerseys retired and recently another Icon of the game was added to that list. Marc Gasol became the second Grizzly ever to have his jersey retired by the Memphis franchise.
The Gasol Brothers had great careers in the NBA and were liked by the fans very much. One brother made his name as a Laker while the other found fame as a Grizzly. With Marc’s jersey retirement, the Gasol Brothers became a first of their kind in the NBA.
Gasol brothers complete unique feat with Marc Gasol’s jersey retirement
The Gasol Brothers are quite famous in the NBA with each of them having great contributions to their respective franchise. Paul Gasol, the infamous Spanish Laker shook the league alongside Kobe Bryant in his days as a baller. He was the perfect partner for Kobe after Shaquille O’Neal left to join the Miami Heat. The Lakers retired his jersey in March 2023.
Marc Gasol, younger brother of Pau found his fame in Memphis. He was a cherished Grizzlies and was an indispensable player for them. He contributed a lot to the franchise and it wouldn’t be the same without him. The Grizzlies recently announced that they would be retiring his jersey. Now that both Gasols have their jerseys retired, they have become the first pair of brothers to achieve this.
Marc’s career with Grizzlies
Marc Gasol made a name for himself as the center for the Memphis Grizzlies when the franchise itself was not in its best state. he ushered them into a new era and was their defensive anchor representing the grit and grind era that the Grizzlies’ fans loved and embraced. In his time with the franchise, he helped them get three 50-win seasons and made the playoffs seven times.
In 2013, he led the Grizzlies to the Western Conference finals and also won the Defensive Player of the Year Award. He set a bunch of franchise records in his tenure with the Grizzlies. He lead the franchise in rebounds, field goals and holds the second place in triple-doubles and assits. He was a great player that the Grizzlies fan truly respect and miss.
