NFL fans made the same joke after former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman posted a photo of himself hanging out with Tony Romo and Dak Prescott.

These three men have provided incredible stability at quarterback for the Cowboys since Aikman’s rookie year in 1989. The three-time Super Bowl champion retired after the 2000 season, and Romo was Dallas’ main starting QB from 2006 to 2015.

Romo suffered a back injury during a 2016 preseason game that prompted Dallas to turn to Prescott to start the season. The 2016 fourth-round pick seized the opportunity and has retained the starting job ever since.

But with Aikman being the only one of these three QBs to lead Dallas to the promised land, social media couldn’t help but make a series of savage jokes:

Romo consistently put up Pro Bowl numbers after taking over as Dallas’ starting quarterback in 2006. But the four-time Pro Bowler had a disappointing 2-4 record in the postseason, and he lost win-or-go-home Week 17 games in 2008 (against the Philadelphia Eagles), 2011 (against the New York Giants), and 2012 (against Washington).

And so far, Prescott’s career has been awfully similar to Romo’s. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler who also puts up good statistics annually, but he’s 2-5 in the postseason for his career. Like Romo, Prescott hasn’t been able to get the Dallas Cowboys past the Divisional Round.

A Pivotal Year Ahead For Dak Prescott & Cowboys

The Cowboys have recorded three straight 12-5 seasons, but they’ve gone just 1-3 in the playoffs under head coach Mike McCarthy. With McCarthy and Prescott entering their contract years, it’s safe to say that major changes loom if Dallas can’t endure a deep playoff run once and for all.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is usually patient with his coaches and quarterbacks. But something will have to change if Dallas is eliminated by the Divisional Round once again in 2024.
