The younger brother of the Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. was recently sentenced to six years in prison. In January 2023, Coban Porter was involved in a drunk driving case that resulted in the deal of Kathy Limon Rothman.

The crash killed Cathy and severely injured her passengers. Michael Porter Jr.’s brother Coban caused the crash after he ran a red light and slammed his vehicle into Cathy’s. Coban pleaded guilty to his actions, which reduced his sentence to a maximum of eight years.

Porter was speeding past the speed limit and had a blood alcohol level of 0.19 which is way more than twice the legally allowed limit of 0.8. “All I can say is that I am sorry. I know that I am never going to be able to right the wrong. … I never thought I would be standing here. I thought I was invincible. It isn’t the first time I chose to drink and drive. I am so sorry,” said Porter in the courtroom.

Coban Porter was a freshman at the University of Denver. He was also on the basketball team, trying to follow in his brother’s footsteps. Before this incident, Porter was averaging 11.4 points for the University of Denver’s basketball team in the 2021-22 season.

Michael Porter Jr. going through a rough phase because of his brother

The Nuggets star Michale Porter Jr. is going through a rough phase because of his brother’s problem. He missed the team practice to attend his brother’s sentencing, however, his teammates and coach were behind him providing their support amid the trying week. “It’s not been easy for him. That is why I give him credit; he is carrying so much in his heart and mind. For him to go out there and do the job speaks to how much strength that young man has,” said Nuggets coach Michael Malone.

Michael’s teammate Jamal Murray revealed that Porter’s family matters are not a matter of discussion in the Nuggets locker room. “I do not think we have spoken to him about it. That is just not something we talk about. We are just keeping it professional here and supporting him. He is handling it well. It is not easy. But yeah, we are just letting him deal with it,” said Jamal Murray.
