More changes are coming to your favorite team’s uniform, and it’s all thanks to the NFL.

The NFL tweaked its uniform policy to allow teams to wear alternate helmets starting in 2022, and now they have changed it once again. On Wednesday, NFL teams were informed of a change to the uniform policy to allow a third helmet design, according to ESPN.com.

Don’t expect that change to happen this year, as the third helmet will come into play in 2025.

This was a pleasant move for teams with their second helmet dedicated to their throwback outfits. In contrast, teams that were already redesigning their uniforms in 2024 were allowed to do so.

Fans of many different NFL fan bases took to social media to respond to the news:

In a memo sent to all teams, the NFL stated that the goal behind the third helmet option is to increase “the overall club flexibility.”

Clubs that want to add a third helmet design must do so by May 1, 2025. This is just tremendous news for the many clubs that really look forward to mixing up their uniforms throughout the year.

As of right now, NFL teams like the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, and Cleveland Browns are reportedly going through new uniform changes for the upcoming season.

The NFL Previously Approved Rule Changes Allowing Alternate Helmets Back In 2021

Back in 2021, the league approved some rule changes that allowed alternate helmets to go with throwback uniforms.

The use of a second helmet was dropped way back in 2013 due to major concerns that wearing more than one helmet during a season might not be safe, but those concerns have eased over the years.
