Football fans were making the same hilarious joke about new Denver quarterback Zach Wilson and ex-Broncos QB Russell Wilson following a surprise trade on Monday.

After a tremendously disappointing three-year stint with the New York Jets, Zach Wilson was traded to the Broncos (along with the No. 276 selection) for the No. 203 pick, via ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

Wilson’s disappointing 2023 season was the final straw for the Jets, who finally gave the No. 2 pick of 2021 a fresh start by sending him to Denver. Wilson now joins a Broncos QB room featuring journeymen Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci.

The 24-year-old Wilson will need a new jersey number, since star cornerback Patrick Surtain II occupies the No. 2 that the former wore in Gotham. And with the Broncos moving on from Russell last month, fans made the same hysterical joke about the two Wilsons on social media:

The Broncos decided to release Russell Wilson last month, just two years after acquiring him in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks. By releasing Wilson, the Broncos are taking on a record $85 million dead money hit.

Zach Wilson Gets The Fresh Start He Needs

One can argue that the Jets didn’t exactly give Zach Wilson the best opportunity to succeed. The offensive line around him was always leaky, and Garrett Wilson was the only game-changing pass-catcher the Jets provided for the BYU product.

The Jets made it clear that Wilson was on borrowed time when they signed Tyrod Taylor to back up Aaron Rodgers, who’s returning from a torn Achilles that ended his 2023 season abruptly in Week 1.

It remains to be seen if the Broncos will draft a quarterback, but the Zach Wilson trade is nothing but a positive for the former second overall pick. He now gets to learn behind one of the all-time great offensive minds in head coach Sean Payton, who’s done wonders with several QBs during his legendary career.
