Victor Wembanyama led the NBA for blocks in the month of April

It’s no secret that Victor Wembanyama is already one of the best rim-protectors in the NBA, if not the best defender, period. While he can’t switch and cover every position with total success, his dominant interior defense is complimented well by above-average perimeter defense, especially for a player of his size.

The San Antonio Spurs did not make the playoffs this season and only played their last game of the season on April 14. Wembanyama only played five games last month, sitting out two before the Spurs ended their season.

During those five games, Wembanyama continued to excel on the defensive end, averaging 5.6 blocks per game. He amassed nine rejections during a loss to the Denver Nuggets.

His 28 blocks led the NBA for the month of April, and his 254 total blocks on the year were 64 more than second-place Chet Holmgren.

Holmgren will have an entire career of getting used to coming in second behind Wembanyama.

Holmgren, Brook Lopez, Anthony Davis, and Rudy Gobert (21 blocks) have all played in more than twice the games Wembanyama played in April, but the blocks leader race for the month wasn’t even close.

The Spurs didn’t make the playoffs this season but will be a fixture in the postseason as soon as next year, and Wembanyama will be anchoring the Spurs on both ends of the floor.

The league has been warned, getting just a taste of what The Alien has to offer in his rookie campaign.
