MANILA–Magnolia made its move in looking for an import to help them contend for the PBA Governors’ Cup title by recruiting NBA veteran Glenn Robinson III.
The son of former NBA All-Star Glenn Jr., who is set to begin an international career after an NBA journeyman stint, confirmed the development through X late Thursday night.
“Excited for my first experience overseas! The Philippines, next stop,” the younger Robinson said while sharing a news report from Grant Afseth of sports news website Essentially Sports.
Robinson is listed at six-feet-six, the exact height limit for the season-opening conference, although he still needs to be measured by the PBA once he arrives here.
A former five-star high school standout, Robinson played two collegiate seasons at Michigan before declaring for the 2014 NBA Draft.
A projected first-rounder in the previous edition, Robinson fell to the second round, going with the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 40th overall pick.
His best performance came during the first half of the 2019-2020 season with the Golden State Warriors, starting alongside Steph Curry and Draymond Green and averaging nearly 13 points a game in 48 outings, all as a starter.
Robinson had his career-high of 25 points as a Warrior in a November game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
With no team picking him off the waivers after the Sacramento Kings released him in February 2021, Robinson sat out the rest of the 2020-2021 season and the next two years before deciding to give the NBA another try.
The 2017 NBA Slam Dunk champion ended up with the Wisconsin Herd of the NBA G-League for the previous season, eventually becoming a key player for the Milwaukee Bucks’ developmental squad.
The setup of the PBA Governors’ Cup, which will run from August to sometime before Christmas, would give the 30-year-old winger a leeway to hope that an NBA team could sign him early into the 2024-2025 season.
