(SPOT.ph) American-Filipino comedian Jo Koy kicked off the 81st Golden Globe Awards ceremony with a 10-minute monologue that seemed to struggle to resonate with the crowd of Hollywood hotshots. While there were online viewers who appreciated the guy’s efforts at handling a high-pressure situation, many were critical of the performance, with one even saying its more of a Hollywood roll call than an actual monologue.

Jo Koy took his sweet time highlighting Barry Keoghan’s penis exposure in Saltburn, asking Robert De Niro how he got his wife pregnant at 80, and making Meryl Streep do the Wakanda salute for the camera. Although he managed to make De Niro giggle for the world to see, his other bits were met with awkward silence instead of laughter.

Realizing he wasn’t getting the reaction he hoped for, Jo Koy made a likely improvised joke about being a last-minute decision to play Globes host, saying, “I got the gig 10 days ago! Do you want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up.” He went on to say he wasn’t behind some of the jokes that night. He had a co-writer, he said, but that might be a joke, too.

Jo Koy jokes at the 2024 Golden Globes

One of Jo Koy’s jokes about Barbie—the movie with the most nominations in the film categories—involved a somewhat cliched observation slash punchline, referring to the toy as “a plastic doll with big boobies.” Cut to director Greta Gerwig giving out an awkward smile-nod in response.

Not even Taylor Swift was spared from being a target. Jo Koy joked about the frequency of the pop star’s mug showing up at the National Football League games (where she goes to support her boyfriend Travis Kelce, who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs) compared to the Golden Globes. She did not look happy.

Where’s Tina Fey and Amy Poehler when you need them?

Despite Jo Koy’s much-panned turn as Globes host, at least Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won Best Actor and Actress for Netflix’s road rage drama Beef. Yay still for Asian representation.

In the standup comic’s defense, he did have little time to get ready for the event, having only been announced as host a few weeks before the ceremony. According to CNN, Chris Rock, Ali Wong, and other comedians turned down the hosting gig before it was offered to Jo Koy. Our dear Josep said he hasn’t slept in 10 days preparing for the event.

Jo Koy is the second Asian to host the Golden Globes following Sandra Oh in 2019.

“This is a beautiful moment,” he told the Associated Press before the event. “I really want to make sure I knock this out of the park.”
