Dustin Poirier had his last outing in UFC 299 where he took on Benoit St-Denis. Poirier defied odds when he won via a spectacular knockout in the second round of their fight. Poirier garnered praise from the MMA community and the UFC President Dana White post fight. It was rumored that the only fight that made sense for Dustin was the title fight.
As he’s the only top contender who’s not booked in the coming months and Islam Makhachev has clearly stated that he wants to be a busy champion.
Dustin Poirier hints out at a potential bout with Islam Makhachev
Dustin Poirier has been sitting at the top of the lightweight rankings for a while now.
He has fought and beaten almost every major lightweight in the UFC. He has fought for the title two times in his career and lost them both via rear naked choke. Dustin recently posted a picture on his social media handle and captioned it,

Dustin Poirier hinted at a potential title fight as he was spotted getting back to the gym in a Instagram post. Poirier has clearly stated in an interview that he would absolutely love to fight for the tile next. He even snapped at Islam Makhachev when he claimed that Dustin doesn’t deserve the title shot.
Islam Makhachev last knocked out Alexander Volkanovski last year. Islam has clearly stated that he wants to fight in the upcoming few months and Poirier is the only top contender who’s not booked. Is the fight ever takes place it will be difficult for Dustin to deal with Islam’s grappling given his history of struggling with folks with grappling.
Dustin has previously lost to pure bred grapplers in Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. It’ll be interesting to see the tweaks Dustin makes in his game to prevent Islam from taking him down. If Dustin takes on Islam Makhachev it will be interesting to see when and where the fight takes place.
