Liam Neeson says Irish actors ‘leave egos at the door’ when making movies

Liam Neeson will star as Lieutenant Frank Drebin in a remake of Naked Gun.

Paramount Pictures is making a new version of Naked Gun set to air in 2025. Liam Neeson, 71, will play clumsy police detective Lieutenant Frank Drebin, originally played by Leslie Nielsen.
Akiva Schaffer will direct the film, which will air in July 2025. Dan Gregor, Doug Man, and Schaffer wrote the script. They previously worked together on 2022’s Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers.

he Naked Gun films, started as the TV show Police Squad!, were high-water marks for slapstick comedy. They ran over six years, including The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad (1988), The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear (1991) and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994).

Nielsen died in 2010 at the age of 84. Before he played Lt Drebin, Nielsen was a dramatic actor.

“It’s been dawning on me slowly that for the past 35 years I have been cast against type,” Nielsen once joked, “and I’m finally getting to do what I really wanted to do.”
